I’ve found myself a nice flat in Cairns. I went to turn my laptop computer on and it blew up. Why?

Many electronic devices will not work in foreign countries because of different power supplies, telephone connections and radio frequencies.

多くの電化製品は海外で使えません。なぜなら、電気の供給や電話の接続部、無線周波数が異なるからです。

Australia uses 240 volts where Japan uses only 110 volts.

Some electrical devices are built to take different voltages and they will work. If your device is not it could explode.

日本は110ボルトに対し、オーストラリアは240ボルトです。電化製品によっては違う電圧に作られているものがあり、それは使うことが出来ます。もしあなたの電化製品がそうでない場合は爆発しますね。

If you want to take an electric operated device overseas ask the maker in Japan if it will work in that particular country.

もし海外に電化製品を持ち出すなら、それがその特定の国で使用できるかどうかメーカーに確認して下さい。

 

Can I do anything about the different voltages?

電圧が違う場合はどうする事ができますか？  

Most Japanese electronic shops will sell voltage adapters. These can cost over five thousand yen. Make sure that you get the correct one. The countries it is designed for will be written on the side or inside the box.

日本の電化製品のお店ならアダプターを販売しています。価格は５千円強でしょう。どの国で使用できるかどうかは箱の横に書かれていますので、確認して適した物を買うことです。

 

How do I connect to the Internet?

どうすればインターネットに接続できますか？

It can be done but it is quite a lot of work.

出来ない事ではないですが、たくさんすることがあります。

Most Internet companies now require a disk to connect. This disk stores their company information on your hard drive. The main problem is the difference between Japanese operating systems and other English operating systems.

主なインターネットの会社ではディスクでの接続を必要としています。ディスクはコンピューターのハードドライブに会社の情報をダウンロードしてくれます。大きな問題として日本語対応のシステムと英語対応のシステムの違いがあります。  

How will I send emails to my friends?

どうすれば友達にメールを送れますか？  

Most city centres, shopping centres, hotels and backpacking places have Internet cafes.

主な街やショッピングセンター、ホテル、バックパッカーの集まるところにはインターネットカフェがあります。

Internet cafes are usually cheap. You pay for only the time you use and you don’t have to carry a heavy laptop with you around the world.

ふつうインターネットカフェは安く、使用時間に対して料金を払えばいいので重いコンピューターを持って旅をしなくてもよいのです
