I once heard an American say that Australia didn’t have telephones?

アメリカ人が「オーストラリアには電話がない」言ったてのを聞いたことがあります。  

All countries have telephones. Basically they operate the same way as telephones in Japan. The three types are:

どの国にも電話はあります。基本的に日本のシステムと同じで３つのタイプがあります：

·       “Pay Phones or Public Phones .”

公衆電話

·       “House Phones”.

家の電話

·       “Mobile Phones ”.

To use a Public Phone you will either need coins or a “telephone card ”. Telephone Cards can be purchased at most “super markets ”.

公衆電話は硬貨かテレフォンカードのどちらかで使用できます。テレフォンカードはスーパーマーケットで購入できます。

Most House Phones will be set up when you move in.

家の電話は引越し先に付いているでしょう。  

How do I know how much I have spent each month?

どれぐらい電話代を月に使っているか、どうすれば分かりますか？  

It is a good idea to keep a little diary beside the telephone. When you make a call take note of the time, date and  the area of your call. When the “bill ” arrives you will be able to check off your calls. Sometimes there can be problems paying bills when sharing with many people.

電話の横でちょっとしたメモを取るのはいいアイデアです。電話をかけた時に、日時、場所を書いておくと請求書がきた時にあなたがかけた電話数が確認できます。複数の人と住んでいる場合は、時として問題になります。

If you are interested in purchasing and using a mobile phone you must be careful about the “contract”. Some companies will require you to sign to a 3 year contract.

もし携帯電話を買って使おうと考えているなら、“契約書”に十分注意してください。会社によっては３年契約の会社もあります。

The best way is to purchase the phone outright and then buy “recharge cards ” every couple of months. These cards can be purchased along with the phone at many shops. This type of system is very popular because you are never hit with a large bill.

最良の方法はすぐに使える携帯電話機を購入し、そしてリチャージカードを数ヶ月おきに買うことです。このリチャージカードは多くの電話を取り扱うお店で買えますし、このシステムでは、莫大な金額の請求が来たりしないですからとても一般的です。  

In Japan we are able to buy a new type of telephone card that has a free dial number and a pin number. These cards can be used at all phones and are really cheap for long distance and international calls. Are these cards available overseas.

日本では新しいタイプのテレフォンカードが買えて、それには無料ダイヤルに暗証番号が付いています。そのカードはどんな電話でも使えて、とてもお得に国際長距離電話がかけられるものなんだけど、そんなカードは海外で利用できますか？  

These cards are definitely the cheapest and easiest way to call back to Japan. Many shops sell these “pre-paid telephone cards ”. These telephone cards are usually flat rate. Which means you are able to call for the same price at any time of the day.

そういったカードは一番安くて簡単に日本にかけられますね。ほとんどのお店で“プリペイドフォンカード”を購入でき、通話料金は一定の料金です。つまり、一日中いつでも同じ料金で電話ができます。
